Department of Japanese Studies

Learning a major foreign language such as Japanese not only gives you a very important skill for the rest of your life, it also widens your horizons and can be fun too. The Department of Japanese Studies offers an undergraduate course which is at once practical and interesting. You can learn the language of the most powerful economy in Asia, and get to know much more about the country and its culture. 

Students will be trained, first and foremost, to become fluent in the Japanese language; a skill which will be extremely useful for the future careers in business, teaching and other professions. The Department maintains an excellent relationship with the Japanese business community in Hong Kong, and internships are available to selected students every summer. 

In addition to Japanese language training from beginning to advanced level, students will also receive a sound education in arts and social sciences. The Department offers courses on the business, cultural, literary and historical aspects of Japan, such as: 

Japanese and Comparative Linguistics; Translation (Japanese - English; Japanese - Chinese); Contemporary Japanese Society, Culture and Economy; Anthropology of Japan; Japanese Business; Women in Japan; Education in Japan; Japanese Literature; China and Japan; as well as many others. 

As part of our regular exchange programmes, students will have the opportunity to visit and attend courses at Japanese universities during the course of their undergraduate programme.
