    1934年,新生活运动在南京发起…… 我们需要一些比仅仅是军事防卫以外的东西,来改进在如此精神和健康下,人们的精神和体格健康。中国传统的四维(基本道德) 被重提为恢复精神的来源,以及在将它们放於今天的情况加以实践。「礼义廉耻」这四个原则,在古代中国引导著人们的品德和相处,以确保各阶层的秩序,启发著人们在工作上的真诚正直,以及要求人们尊重别人。 
    上文取材自1941年蒋介石夫人宋美龄的著作。

    The New Life Movement
    New Life was launched at Nanchang (Nanjing) in 1934. ... Something more than mere military protection was necessary to restore to mental and physical fitness the people in such a state of mind and health. Four of the cardinal virtues of Old China were recalled as a possible source of reviviscence, and it was determined to essay a practical application of them to present-day conditions. They were 'Li', 'I', 'Lien', and 'Chih', the four principles which, in ancient China, governed personal behavior and relations, assured justice for all classes, inspired integrity in official and business life, and demanded respect for the rights of others. ...
